For my magazine i chose the genre of 'Indie, Rock and Electro' music.
It would have similarities to other magazines such as Kerrang and NME. I chose this genre because it is the type of music i am most interested in, and know more about.
The title for my magazine is 'Ion Square' i chose this as it is a Bloc Party song, and this band fit into the appropriate genre. I chose the front covers image to fit my main story, which is about a local friends band named 'Puritans' This image of them was taken at their gig in Brighton, at The Hope, by myself. This band was chosen as they make music that fits into this specific genre. I liked the way it is an action shot, and i also like the positioning of the drummer and singer in the image. The lighting plays a strong part in creating a mood and effect as it is simple and dull, i feel this works better than if i had used bold and bright colours. It makes it seem more sophisticated and therefore readers may see it as value for money. The blue in the photo has almost become the only real colour on the page, which inspired the grey in the title linking throughout all the pages of the magazine.
The way the shot is so natural and not planned, allows it to fit and work better. Just the small things such as clothes, body language and facial expressions help make it look more realistic as a magazine. The font i chose for my magazine title has a link to other magazines such as NME and Kerrang, as they have such strong structured letters and characters giving off the idea of a bold and organized magazine. I made the Q in 'square' a darker shade of grey to make the title more recognisable, so it stands out to the audience and readers.
My contents page is fairly simple as i feel its job is to inform, and be easy to read. It still contains a photo to create colour and interest. The photo was taken in 2009 at Reading Festival, by myself. It goes with the article below it. I listed bands down the left hand side, with relevant page numbers so they are easier to find. Down the right hand side i gave some stories that are inside the magazine, to draw in readers attention and give them more information about what is inside.
On my double page spread i gave more writing than photographs, you can see 4 photos i took myself, again of the Puritans and two in my friends bedroom of a guitar to be used as an image for the advertisement of the music shop. The article consists of an interview and a few paragraphs on the background of the band. I tried to make the article a realistic length, so i filled up majority of the 2 pages, it was hard to do without leaving gaps as i did not use large photographs therefore i relied on the writing. The layout was important as i wanted to keep it all in line, the computer programme helped me do this with the ruler but it was still hard to keep the columns and spacing the same. On the second page the article includes a single photo of Kam, the lead singer. I made it more interesting by writing lyrics at the top of the photo. I used their myspace to advertise the band and make them believable and accessible to readers. I did the APE music store advertisement along the bottom of the second page to make it look more like a magazine, rather than just a story. The green font over the black and white photo makes it more eye catching as its different from the rest of the page colouring, making the article successful.

My magazine is for a certain genre of music, so therefore it represents people who associate themselves with that specific genre. The images i used were inspired by the stereotypical 'indie' scene; the clothes, the hair and their attitudes. The bands mentioned throughout the magazine were picked so they would appeal to a target audience. Language on the front cover is used in a pun like way, only to be understood by people with knowledge on this specific music scene/genre. For example 'BLOC PARTY SHOW POSITIVE TENSION ON READING STAGE.' This is used to portray the idea that they gave a good performance, but at the same time 'Positive Tension' is a song title by the band. I did the same sort of thing of my double page spread with the Puritans, but in a more subtle way. With the photos i took being of young teenagers in a band, playing drums and guitars. It gives off the idea that youth of today have a certain will power about them and determination to learn these instruments and they will go to great lengths to create success behind their passion.
When it comes to selling my magazine, i feel it would be sold in independent music outlets. I think people would chose to stock my magazine as its a magazine that trys to introduce new music to the scene, so therefore it would encourage new audiences into their shop; influencing new interests and ideas in the music industry itself.
Target audience
-Teenagers to middle 20's, youths interested in this particular scene.
-Both male and female
-People who are into new bands in this genre, i put the Puritans on the front cover to put them across as a 'new band' giving the idea that my magazine is into promoting and advertising other new acts each week. This effect is created by making them my main story.
-In terms of groups i feel my magazine would appeal to people individualists and people of a 'D' social group. Although i did not write my magazine to fit a particular stereotypical buyer.
-Small things like chosing the price was done to fit the imaginary audience, as i feel 4.96 for a magazine being sold in small outlets is a price that fits and works. As my magazine would have a total of approximately 80 pages to it, when finished.
Technologies
I found the programme of Adobe easy to use, as i am used to using computers. What i enjoyed about using the programme was the wide range of things it let you do to your work, things you would not be able to do otherwise. Small things like exact and equal spacing between letters, and letter size changed the layout and appearance alot. Access to this facility was a complete advantage.

In comparison to the preliminary task there is alot more to do, as the project is completely from scratch. All your own ideas. Where as before, the class teacher gave you the idea of a college magazine. We did not have to do a double page spread at that point, but doing it this time round was my favourite part of the project. My least favourite was the contents page, as there is alot of information to put on the page and i ran out of inventive and interesting ways to lay it out. I definitely planned more for my main task, as it was more important and you had to apply more detail. If i did this project again, i would possibly pick a different style of music such as 'pop' to try and be more inventive and make the magazine more interesting and colourful; as i feel this genre allows you to do so.
Due to not having the correct programme on my home computer at the time of the upload, i had to transfer all my designs onto a alternative software. Below are my final peices.
Below i have a written script of what i wrote in my double page spread:
New on the main scene the band 'Puritans' are heading to undeniably epic things. From gigs in Brighton to touring
Berlin as a support act.
Lead vocalist and guitarist, Kamran Khan comes from a small local village in the heart of West Sussex along with the other band mates. His passion is his music, and the music of the bands which inspire him. Which branch out to late 80's bands such as 'The Pixies' right up to the modern electro scene of 2000 with 'Grizzly Bear'.
There are three other members to 'Puritans': Hassan Anderson who plays Guitar/vocals, George Williams on Bass guitar/backing vocals and last but not least Perry Hayes on drums.
Puritans have their own MySpace page which you can view at http://www.myspace.com/puritansuk.
Other bands of which the band admire and play alongside consist of,
The Ethnics, Prince Harry, SHIRLEY and Kneckt. The band started a few years ago as a group of childhood friends, even from a young age they were encouraged to chase their dream.
Tell us something about yourself and the band:
Kamran: It just happened, we walked into each other.
Perry: We skate together.
Hassan: We went to the same school, basically.
Kamran: And basically, this is what happened.
I picked up the guitar when I was 11 and I told George how to play bass. And then I wrote some songs, and me and George played together for a while and then, thought we’d maybe like to start a band. Then Perry came to my house and I had a drum-kit at my house, and he started playing, he didn’t even play drums, so we were like „Yeah, he can drum“.
We found Hassan, and we thought, man he’s pretty hot“ he couldn’t play guitar but we thought he was good-looking.
Hassan: They turned my amp off and I just wouldn’t play.
Kamran: Eventually he learned how to play guitar so at every gig we turned up the volume a little bit.
Hassan: This is the loudest it’s ever been.
Kamran: So that’s how it happened.
If you could have any superpower what would it be, and how would your costume look like?
George: Basically I would like to be invisible, my costume would be nothing because I’d be invisible.
Perry: I’d have the incredible power of healing. I’d be able to heal people just by touching them and stuff and my costume would be a big cape, a nice big red cape, a hat and a cigar.
Hassan: I would love to be in control of time. So I could rewind and forward time. Time does not exist for me. My uniform would be all over spandex.
Kamran: Errm, I don’t know. I’m content. I’m happy I don’t need superpowers. But my suit would be like, I’d be naked but everywhere I’d go people would be like...nice suit“.
Describe the person sitting next to you:
George: Perry is very generous, very nice guy, thinks about other people. Always willing to give money out to people, pay for drinks and stuff. He’s a lovely fella. Sometimes he might has his mood-swings and shouts at you. But he’s quiet a good friend.
Perry: This is my main mate Hassan. We skate
together, we went to school together. He has taught me a lot. Hands down one of the nicest guys. He has got one of the best personalities in the world. I’ve got nothing bad to say about this guy.
Hassan: Kamran Khan, I’ve known him for a while. He’s one of the most natural musicians I’ve ever met in my life. I love him.
Kamran: George, what can I say about him? He’s beautiful.
George: Say something original.
Kamran: He befriended me when I was a young German on the streets of England. George is an excellent bass player. He needs to change his Pokémon ringtone.
Perry: He’s got one of the biggest heart.
Kamran: He thinks about other people before himself.
Last one: What would you like to say to the viewers?
Perry: check us out. If you don’t like us, who cares. If you like us- Thank you very much for
listening to us.
George: Don’t judge us on our recordings.
Perry: When we play live it’s totally different.
